Description
Overview
Methylene Blue is a synthetic dye with a history spanning over 130 years, originally developed as a textile dye, it became the first synthetic drug used in medicine (for malaria and methemoglobinemia). In mitochondrial biology, Methylene Blue acts as a redox cycling electron shuttle, directly accepting electrons from NADH and donating them to cytochrome c, effectively bypassing damaged segments of the electron transport chain (Complexes I and III). This mechanism enhances ATP production, reduces mitochondrial ROS generation, and improves cellular respiration efficiency. It also has potent neuroprotective effects: inhibits tau aggregation, reduces amyloid-beta toxicity, and enhances memory via MAO inhibition and monoaminergic upregulation. Used in low-dose protocols for cognitive enhancement, anti-aging, and mitochondrial support.
