Description
Overview
Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) is an essential water-soluble vitamin required for DNA synthesis, red blood cell maturation, myelin sheath maintenance, and methyl group transfer. Deficiency causes megaloblastic anemia, peripheral neuropathy, and cognitive decline. Oral absorption requires intrinsic factor (often absent in older adults, GI disorders, or gastric bypass patients). Injectable B12 bypasses gut absorption entirely, critical for those on GLP-1 agents (slowed gastric emptying reduces nutrient absorption), vegans, or anyone with absorption issues. Methylcobalamin is the bioactive form; cyanocobalamin is converted to active form in the body.
