Overview

In the literature, vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is described as an essential cofactor for two enzymatic reactions in human metabolism: methionine synthase (methylation and one-carbon metabolism) and methylmalonyl-CoA mutase. Unlike receptor-mediated peptides, it functions as a coenzyme inserted into enzyme active sites.

Description

Overview

Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) is an essential water-soluble vitamin required for DNA synthesis, red blood cell maturation, myelin sheath maintenance, and methyl group transfer. Deficiency causes megaloblastic anemia, peripheral neuropathy, and cognitive decline. Oral absorption requires intrinsic factor (often absent in older adults, GI disorders, or gastric bypass patients). Injectable B12 bypasses gut absorption entirely, critical for those on GLP-1 agents (slowed gastric emptying reduces nutrient absorption), vegans, or anyone with absorption issues. Methylcobalamin is the bioactive form; cyanocobalamin is converted to active form in the body.

Structure & Chemistry

  • Molecular formula: C₆₃H₉₁CoN₁₃O₁₄P
  • Category: ENERGY / NEUROLOGICAL / METABOLIC
  • Molecular size: ~1.34 kDa (cobalamin complex with cobalt center)
